Lightweight & Powerful. The Smith & Wesson 329PD fills a unique role in the world. It is the quintessential all around sporting handgun for the outdoorsman. The 329PD is ideal for hikers, hunters, backpackers, fisherman and just about anyone who needs to be armed in places where dangerous wild game are known to lurk.
Chambered for the potent .44 Magnum cartridge, there are very few creatures living on land, sea or in the air that are immune to its stopping power. Loaded with rat shot, it is almost like bringing a shotgun to your campsite for protection against unwanted snakes or other vermin.
Weighing in at just 25.1 ounces, this revolver is strong enough to handle full power .44 Magnum loads. However, it is equally at home firing reduced recoil .44 Special loads as well.
At the heart of the 329PD lies Scandium, a rare metal that has the ability to transmit its strength and flexibility when alloyed with other metals, in this case aluminum. To reduce weight even further, a 6- shot fluted titanium cylinder has been included.
Outside of pure aesthetics, it is not exactly clear what Smith & Wesson was thinking about including a set of wood grips on this model. Nevertheless, the Goncalo style grips certainly add a sense of elegance and class to the weapon.
The first thing anyone with common sense does after firing the 329PD is switch over to the rubber grips that are included with the package. Make no mistake, this revolver is not for the faint of heart.
When shooting full power .44 Magnum loads, the recoil is going to be brutal. But there�s no reason to run a steady diet of hot, heavy duty-type ammo through this small revolver. The gun's sole purpose is simple- it was designed to save your life in an emergency.
The smooth organic contours make it a superb hunting handgun. Admittedly, loaded with .44 Magnum cartridges, it�s probably too much gun for concealed carry.
On the other hand, downloading to .44 Special hollow point ammunition combined with the 329PD's ergonomic design make it an excellent choice for a self- defense handgun. It has a transfer bar safety mounted on the frame.
If you're unfamiliar with the function of a transfer bar, it is a thin strip of metal that rises once the trigger is squeezed, allowing the hammer's energy to be transferred to the firing pin and then on to the primer. The invention of the transfer bar safety allowed revolvers to be carried with a full six rounds in the cylinder without the chance of the hammer being snagged and / or being dropped, then inadvertently fired.
In addition, the gun is equipped with a built in key lock to disable the gun for safe storage. The Smith & Wesson Model 329PD has a matte black finish that provides an overall stealthy appearance, while a set of adjustable front fiber optic sights provide solid aiming capabilities in low light.
Shots can be fired in either a double action mode, or for greater precision, the hammer can be easily cocked back and fired using a crisp single action trigger pull. The hammer is checkered on the top side, making cocking sure and foolproof.
The double action mode is long, but the trigger remains smooth throughout. When cocking the hammer for single action, the trigger pull is almost imperceptible. The 4- inch barrel features an elegantly sculpted full-length under lug that protects the ejector rod from being bent if the underside of the barrel were to violently strike against something, or even get dropped on the pavement.
An extremely smooth cylinder latch, combined with positive cartridge extraction, make reloading easy. Overall, the Smith & Wesson Model 329PD is an excellent choice for any shooter looking for a versatile, powerful, lightweight all purpose handgun.
