Building Quality Pistols. Dan Wesson is a semi-custom grade 1911 that sells for much less than traditional brands such as Les Baer, Nighthawk, Wilson or Ed Brown. In the grand scheme of things, the V-BOB, which is the abbreviation for "Valor Bobtail Commander",has a solid build that falls somewhere in between the top-tier assembly line guns from Springfield, Colt or Kimber and the aforementioned hand-made high end custom 1911s.

Though a relative newcomer on the semi-auto scene, Dan Wesson gained fame back in the 1970s and 80s for their strong and accurate revolvers featuring quick interchangeable barrels. Today, the company is owned by CZ-USA and specializes in producing a full featured line-up of exceptionally high valued 1911 pistols.

At the heart of the Dan Wesson V-BOB design is a forged stainless steel slide that is home to a 4.25- inch match grade barrel displaying remarkable accuracy. The overall fit and finish of the pistol is superb, largely being hand crafted with extremely tight tolerances.

The pistol wears an excellent set of tactical ledge tritium night sights for low light target acquisition. To provide wear and corrosion resistance, the Dan Wesson V-BOB frame is also constructed out of solid forged stainless steel. It has a well executed 25 lines-per-inch checkering on both front and back straps to maintain a positive grip while firing. Its magazine release is slightly extended, as is the forged Greider slide stop. Neither of these stick out enough to be a tactical liability.

A solid aluminum Greider trigger is adjustable for overtravel. When combined with the carefully fitted match grade hammer and sear constructed out of tool steel and not MIMS-- it gives the Dan Wesson V-BOB a crisp, clean trigger pull.

The stippled VZ G10 tactical grips feels natural in the hand, are extremely attractive and provide a solid grasp while firing. Even though the grips have a fair amount of surface texture, they are by no means abrasive.

The Ed Brown beavertail safety has been expertly blended-- there are no uneven gaps between it and the frame. This allows the shooter to get up even higher on the bore axis to minimize felt recoil, greatly improving control while minimizing the possibility of slide bite. It also has a raised memory groove to ensure activation in a hasty draw, where its cradle is recessed for the commander style hammer.

An Ed Brown thumb safety is extended, but the paddle is fairly narrow to maximize effective concealment. It is fitted perfectly and the engagement is smooth, yet positive.

The Dan Wesson V-BOB is a true Commander length pistol. A Commander length slide provides excellent reliability, an outstanding sight radius with a pistol that is capable of clearing leather faster. It also features a full-size frame that offers greater handling and control. To make it more comfortable in the hand, the back of the mainspring housing has been bobbed.

For service or repair, the pistol is backed by a manufacturers 5- year warranty on all mechanical components, while the finish and grips are covered for a period of 1- year. Overall, the Dan Wesson V-BOB represents the best bargain on a high quality, reliable and accurate hand fit 1911.
