A Battle Proven Warhorse. The AR-15 was first built by ArmaLite as an infantry rifle for the United States military. After experiencing financial problems, ArmaLite sold the design to Colt in 1958. Several modifications were made -- most notably relocation of the charging handle to the rear of the receiver -- and the M-16 rifle was adopted into U.S. military service in 1962.

Colt then began selling the semi- automatic version of the M-16 on the civilian market in 1963, which was subsequently branded the "AR-15" sporter rifle. The designation stuck and has been in place ever since. Even though "AR-15" has been a registered trademark of Colt since day one, it has become engrained in American culture as an industry standard term used describe all of the Colt clones as well.

The AR-15/M-16 represents the most successful weapon's platform in history. Never before has a military firearm evolved so rapidly, so completely and in so many directions. It often said that the AR-15 is the erector set of the shooting world, being set- up, changed, accessorized, rethought, rebuilt and put together to suit almost any need.

This precision design has successfully served as a military, sniper, law enforcement, defensive, hunting, competition and target rifle in more calibers and configurations than one can possible conceive. No other firearm can make that claim. Many argue that it is the most versatile military small arm ever invented and after 60- years of service, is still going strong today as our nation's primary battle rifle.

At the heart of the design is a direct gas impingement system. Gas is tapped from the barrel as the bullet passes by the port located above the rifle's front sight base. The gas then rushes into the port and down a gas tube located above the barrel and into the upper receiver.

From there, the gas tube funnels into the bolt carrier. This gas system unlocks the bolt and begins the cycling process, but only after the bullet has exited the barrel. Direct impingement has several advantages over gas piston systems. For semi- automatic rifles with a barrel length of 16" or greater, impingement AR-15s are lighter, easier to free float the barrel, and much less expensive to manufacture.

A 6- position collapsible Magpul SL buttstock allows the shooter to adjust length of pull to their personal preference. Similarly, a carbine length Magpul SL handguard and detachable foregrip provides steady handling. All rifle dimensions are mil-spec.

The Colt 6920's bolt has been magnetic particle inspected, shot peened and pressure tested to ensure that it's structurally sound and will not fail. Similarly, the gas key has been properly staked to the bolt carrier. An ergonomic design makes the charging handle, safety selector, magazine release and bolt catch easy to access. The single stage, service grade trigger is both positive and breaks cleanly at 7- pounds.

The M4 profile 16.1" 4150 chrome moly steel barrel is then chrome lined to make it less susceptible to fouling, reduce corrosion, enhance feeding and increase barrel life. The 1:7" twist rate is fast enough to stabilize heavy bullets like the 77gr match round, while still capable of accurately firing standard 55gr ball ammo.

The Colt 6920 is chambered for 5.56 NATO cartridges , which allows you to safely fire both full power 5.56 or lower powered .223 rounds interchangeably without adjustment to the gas system. M4 feed ramps ensure proper feeding of ammunition to help reduce malfunction rates, even during rapid fire.

Both upper and lower receivers are forged from durable, lightweight aircraft grade 7075-T6 aluminum. Due to the fact the bolt locks into a steel extension on the barrel and not the receiver, the Colt 6920 can easily use such lightweight construction materials without sacrificing structural integrity.

The receiver surfaces are then hard coat anodized and dry film lubed per military spec to provide wear and corrosion resistance. The rifle weighs in at just 6.9 pounds and is a fast handling carbine. It includes one 30- round Magpul PMAG. All steel parts wear a mil- spec manganese phosphate finish, including the barrel. Build quality is excellent and there is virtually no play between the upper and lower receiver.

A detachable Magpul MBUS rear flip- up sight rides on the receiver's Picatinny rail. Unlike the rear sight, the A2 front sight post is fixed and adjustable for elevation. The Magpul MOE's rear pistol is textured and provides positive traction. In the rare event a round fails to go into battery, the rifle is equipped with a forward assist. Similarly, a spring loaded receiver dust cover is designed to keep out dirt and other debris from entering the action, but instantly opens after the first shot.

For repair, the Colt is backed by a 1- year warranty. Overall, the Colt 6920 is an affordable, well built mil- spec AR-15 rifle designed for many years of reliable service.
