Held To A Higher Standard. Shotguns have long been the gold standard for personal protection, and for good reason. Handguns are effective when it comes to home defense, but nothing says "Howdy" like a 12- gauge.

The Mossberg 590 was first introduced in the 1980's and was later adopted by the U.S. Military for combat operations. Born of the 500 series that appeared in the 1960's, it has a 9- shot capacity and is outfitted with a military style bayonet lug.

Mossberg's Model 590 was the only pump action shotgun to ever pass Mil-Spec 3443 requirements. Throughout those rigorous tests, all shotguns were frozen, baked, salt water immersed, coated with sand and then dropped to measure safety, function and durability. Parts interchangeability was mandated and the guns had to pass a 3,000 round buckshot endurance test.

With a rock solid reputation on the battlefield, the 590 series tactical shotgun has a proven track record when our men and women in uniform needed a rugged, dependable firearm they could count on-- no matter the conditions.

At the heart of the Mossberg 590 is a series of reliability enhancing features like the anti-jam elevator. Similarly, it also has dual extractors for flawless feeding, positive shell extraction and consistent ejection.

A single large locking lug is used to secure the breech. The magazine tube is located below the barrel, and is screwed into the receiver, which is machined from aluminum alloy to save on weight.

It is also drilled and tapped to enable the shooter to add optics. An easily detachable trigger group houses most of the fire control system, and is removed by a single push pin.

The 590's ambidextrous two position top- tang safety is much easier to disengage than competing crossbolt designs, and the action bar release is located just behind the trigger. A high visibility fluorescent orange front sight is brazed to the barrel combined with a ghost ring aperture rear sight provides greater accuracy when firing slugs.

The 20" barrel and assembly are machined from steel, then drawn down to a fixed cylinder bore for greater efficiency at self- defense distances. Should the Mossberg 590 ever require service, it is backed by an industry leading 10- year warranty.

The shotgun is chambered for 2-3/4" shells, but can easily handle jaw rattling 3" magnum buckshot. A bead front sight is threaded onto the barrel and gets on target quickly.

All metal parts wear a marinecoat finish. The buttstock has a nicely textured grip with a non- slip recoil pad for positive shoulder engagement. A circular grip forend provides solid traction while racking rounds in and out of the chamber.

In addition to a detachable trigger, complete disassembly is further simplified by a tubular magazine that is threaded into the receiver. Since the barrel is collared to the magazine tube and held in place by a magazine cap, removal of the magazine spring and follower allows the shotgun to be thoroughly cleaned.

Overall, the Mossberg 590 is a rugged, ultra reliable, affordable and user friendly self- defense shotgun.
