Small Pistol. Big Features. The Smith & Wesson M&P Shield is designed specifically for concealed carry, equally at home in a slim-line holster, pocket or purse. The Shield is for those who need a small, reliable pistol with enough power and accuracy for practical self- defense.

It can serve either as a primary carry pistol, or as a no-compromise backup. In mechanical design and operating features, it is simply a scaled-down version of S&Ws full-size, double-stack M&P service pistol. The only major difference between the larger M&Ps and the Shieldother than scaleis the Shields slimmer magazines and the fact that its grip does not feature interchangeable backstraps.

To make it thinner than a standard M&P required some additional changes. The slide stop and manual safety are single-sided to keep the pistol slim. But the magazine catch is still reversible and has a steel insert, while the much smaller

Shield also retains the larger M&Ps natural-pointing 18-degree grip angle and hand-fitting contour. A user friendly feature of the M&P Shield is its easy disassembly system.

The Plus introduces the Flat Face trigger which is lighter and crisper. In addition to the improved trigger pull, the Flat Face Trigger produces a more tactile and audible reset which has been requested by end users.

Field striping, cleaning and routine maintenance are achieved by locking the slide rearward, and then rotating the takedown lever. This disconnects the sear and allows the slide to effortlessly be removed from the frame. To ensure maximum safety, the disassembly system forces the operator to retract the slide, thereby guaranteeing an unloaded chamber before releasing the striker.

The Shield uses a short-stroke, double action only, striker pull trigger. It has a sleek, contoured, scalloped slide that provides secure loading or unloading. The grip frame is Lightweight Zytel Polymer, and the barrel and slide are stainless steel with a satin black Melonite 68 HRc finish.

The backstrap and frontstrap of the grip (along with the surface of the magazine-release button) are stippled for a secure grasp in rapid fire, and the magazine button has just enough height for positive engagement without overprotruding. All edges, surfaces and corners on the M&P Shield pistols are beveled and rounded for ease of holstering, carrying and drawing. There is a loaded-chamber view port at the rear top of the chamber for visual confirmation that the chamber is charged.

The M&P Shields heavy-duty external extractor design is also the same spec as full-size M&P pistols. The frame contains a set of forward and rear steel blocks that house the fire control mechanism.

These serve as the guides upon which the slide reciprocates. Considering the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield's slide only contacts the frame at four points, instead of full-length contact like most other designs, it makes for a very reliable, self-cleaning style rail system that leaves plenty of room to eject dirt, grit, or sand out of the action.

This pistol has a 4" barrel, weighs in at a little over 19- ounces, has a DAO trigger pull of roughly 6.5 pounds and the trigger travel is just under one-third of an inch. The gun comes supplied with one extended 8- round and one 7- round flush fit magazines that are made of genuine steel.

A set of fiber optic sights sit on top of the slide, are highly visible, easy to use and track reasonably well. Finally, Smith & Wesson uses a captive recoil spring system on the M&P Shield that contains a stainless steel guide rod.
