The Rimfire Renaissance. Marlin is one of the oldest and best known firearms manufacturers in the United States, with a company history dating all the way back to the early 1880's. The XT-22R is an American made bolt action hunting rifle.
It is built on a tried-and-true action that's not flashy or particularly innovative, but with each flick of the bolt, you can be certain it will reliably kick out empty brass and load the next round into the chamber. With its old-school action, the accuracy this rifle exhibits is nothing short of amazing.
At the heart of the design is a trigger system Marlin calls "Pro-Fire". A good trigger mechanism is the single most important part of any accurate hunting rifle. Poor triggers encourage flinching, flyers and results in wounded animals.
Good triggers break like glass and with moderate pressure, minimum overtravel-- are a complete joy to use. There's little doubt the inherent accuracy exhibited by the XT-22R is directly attributable to this superb trigger which breaks crisply and consistently every time.
The Pro-Fire trigger is a simple, user adjustable two lever mechanism (sear + trigger). Somewhat similar in appearance to the Savage AccuTrigger or Glock Safe Action trigger, Marlin's safety blade design can actually be lightened to a 2.5lb. pull.
However, the Pro-Fire system should not be confused as a copy of the Savage--it is actually quite different from the AccuTrigger and was developed entirely in- house by Marlin engineers and technicians. Trigger pull weight adjustments can be made by removing the action from the stock, loosening a lock nut and then turning a set screw in front of the trigger housing.
In addition to its top- notch trigger, the 22" standard profile barrel has Marlin's signature Micro-Groove rifling which greatly contributes to this rifle's inherent accuracy. For those unfamiliar with the process, Micro-Groove barrels contains more lands and grooves than conventional rifling, resulting in a bullet that is not as deeply distorted and therefore more accurate.
It also provides uniform bore dimensions and a very smooth internal finish. On the tip of the barrel is a precision crown that improves barrel harmonics, reducing vibration that may otherwise throw the bullet's trajectory off target.
For iron sights, the Marlin XT-22R includes an adjustable rear with ramped front that are highly visible on get on target well. An integral 3/8" dovetail receiver rail allows the easy mounting of optics, while the receiver is also drilled and tapped for the option of installing standard Weaver style bases.
The newly designed XT synthetic stock is based on years of consumer research and features a user friendly ergonomic contour. For even balance and easy handling, the stippled pistol grip includes a palm swell while the forearm has a standard contour. Stock swivel studs allow the quick attachment of your favorite rifle sling.
A deep blued finish can be found on all steel parts, including the barrel. The thumb activated manual safety is conveniently positioned directly behind the bolt handle and the rifle weighs in at only 6lbs.
A 7- shot single column magazine is included and provides ultra reliable, consistent feeding. For service or repairs, the rifle is backed by the company's standard 5- year manufacturer's warranty.
Overall, the Marlin XT-22R is a very capable, accurate, reliable and affordably priced .22LR rimfire rifle.
