May Not Be A Really Good Gun, But It's A Good Enough Gun. The Hi-Point Carbine is a short, handy, reliable weapon that's ideal as a home defense or plinking rifle. It was developed specifically for the civilian market. While not aimed at law enforcement use, the gun has nevertheless been approved and purchased by a small number of U.S. police departments that cannot easily afford to equip their officers with more expensive long guns.

The rifle is constructed using a blend of polymer and alloy metals, which reduce production costs and ultimately selling price. Often mislabeled as an assault weapon, the Hi-Point Carbine is a semi- automatic pistol caliber rifle. At the heart of the design is a simple blowback action. It is chambered for 9mm, rated for +P ammunition and includes one ten round magazine. A removable ghost ring aperture rear sight has been paired with with a high profile protected front sight that gets on target well. A receiver mounted extended Picatinny rail allows a shooter to easily attach optics, and a red dot scope is included with the package.

The 16.5" barrel provides acceptable down range accuracy at distances up to 50- yards. Weighing in at 6.25 pounds, the rifle is handy and easy to maneuver through a hallway or doorway. Due to the rifle's extremely short overall length of only 31", pieing around corners is easy accomplished with minimal exposure to a potentially dangerous threat. A knurled, extended charging handle makes it easy to load the chamber, especially in a pinch.

The buttstock is a skeletonized, all- weather, reinforced polymer design with a recoil cushioning internal buffer buttpad. A textured polymer pistol grip provides excellent control, while the grooved forend allows the shooter to maneuver easily. Accessories such as a foregrip, light or laser (sold separately) can be attached to an integral rail on the forend, or an alternate rail mounted to the barrel.

Recoil is almost non-existent, even while firing +P ammunition. User friendly fire controls are conveniently accessible within the shooters workspace. The Hi-Point Carbine has a thumb actuated safety that is conveniently mounted above the grip. Similarly, a grip mounted magazine release allows for quick reloads. The rifle is a striker driven design and has a last round lock open feature.

If you were looking for a rifle with superior design ergonomics, the finest materials, hand craftsmanship, great aesthetics and a crisp trigger -- this certainly isn't it. However, Hi-Point Carbines do consistently score high in evaluations run by the "Consumer Reports" version of the firearms industry known as Gun Test Magazine. Realistically speaking, if you're looking for a dependable home defense weapon and didn't want sell a kidney just to afford it, or perhaps just an all- purpose plinker with some user friendly features, this rifle may be the ticket. The price point and simplicity make it a good choice for the beginning shooter just starting to exercise their right to armed self- defense.
