The Rifle that Changed the World. The AK-47 rifle was invented by legendary Soviet weapons designer Mikhail Kalashnikov. Completed in 1947 and adopted into Soviet military service in 1949 as the "7.62mm Kalashnikov assault rifle" (or "AK"), the design was neither pioneering nor altogether new technology.

Rather, the AK-47 was a hybrid rifle based on several other successful designs. It utilized the trigger mechanism, double locking lugs and unlocking raceway of the U.S. M1 Garand, the safety of the John Browning designed Remington Model 8 with the gas system and intermediate size cartridge of the German Sturmgewehr 44.

The VSKA rifle features an all new bolt carrier, front trunnion, and feed ramp machined from S7 tool steel and specially heat treated for maximum durability. S7, often referred to as a Shock-Resisting Tool Steel, is commonly used for tools like chisels and jackhammer tips as it has maximum shock resistance and high compression strength, while retaining toughness. The front trunnion and bolt are machined from billet and exceeded the durability goals for the project. Additionally, the VSKA features a carburized 4140 steel bolt, a chrome-moly 4150 barrel, and sports the RAK-1 Enhanced Trigger Group for an impressive trigger pull. Along with a manganese-phosphate finish, Century adds a little style to the heavy-duty brute with an American Maple wood buttstock and forend.

While not guaranteed, Century Arms maintains that the VSKA rifle is capable of 1.5" M.O.A. accuracy. A dehorned magazine well has no sharp edges that are common on many stamped rifles and magazines fit tight-- without the wobble common to other AK-47's on the market.

At the heart of the design is its Kalashnikov long stroke gas piston system. A gas port in the barrel, located at the 45-degree-angled gas block roughly 2 inches forward of the handguard, taps gas off the bore when a cartridge is fired.

This gas impacts against the forward face of a large gas piston, which is affixed directly to the bolt carrier assembly. As a result, the force of the gas pushes back this large, heavy chunk of steel to rotate and unlock the dual-lugged bolt from its locking recesses to cycle the action.

The bolt carrier is a one-piece unit with lightning cuts to reduce weight. A fixed cam on the bolt rides in a kidney-shaped groove in the underside of the carrier that rotates the bolt in and out of battery. Two horizontally opposed lugs on the bolt body lock up in corresponding locking recesses in a barrel block that is housed in the stamped steel receiver.

Along with its generous clearance between moving parts and tapered cartridge case, the gun has been engineered to endure large amounts of fouling and brutal punishment while continuing to cycling consistently and reliably. All this comes at a price as the AK-47 is not renown for it's precision.

With a standard length of pull, the "Warsaw" length classic AK-47 walnut buttstock has a handsome appearance. While the pistol grip is constructed out of a durable polymer whose shape provides good control and handling, the handguards are hardwood and match the stock well. The rifle has a standard AKM dual vented handguards.

All springs are high grade Wolff throughout the rifle. The standard AKM hooded post front sight is paired with a notched rear tangent sight graduated from 100 to 1,000 meters. For repair, the rifle is backed by a 1- year warranty. Overall, the Century Arms VSKA is an affordable, well built AK-47 style rifle designed for year of reliable service.
