The Custom Shop Approach. Founded in 1939 as a tool and die manufacturer,
Forjas "Taurus" is an international conglomerate based in Brazil with divisions focusing on firearms, metals manufacturing, plastics, body armor, helmets and civil construction. Taurus produced its first revolver in 1941 and began to export firearms to the United States in 1968. The company's various models share strong similarities with the proven designs of manufacturing powerhouses such as Smith & Wesson and Beretta, which is no coincidence. In fact, all three firms share a common past .

In 1971, the parent company for Smith & Wesson purchased a controlling interest in Taurus, thus allowing the two companies to easily share information regarding manufacture and design. Even though Taurus was sold to its current owners in 1977, the shared history is the reason the wheel gun designs are so similar. Then in 1980, after completing contracts to produce firearms for Brazil's military, Taurus purchased Beretta's Sao Paulo manufacturing plant along with the tooling, technical drawings and workforce necessary to produce several semi-automatic pistol designs.

At the heart of the Taurus PT1911 is a custom shop approach. The company boasts that there are $2,1,00 worth of retail value features that come standard with the pistol. Here is an itemized breakdown: Mil-Spec 1911 Pistol ($500), Full Length Guide Rod + Reverse Plug ($35), Heine Straight Eight Sights ($150), Serrated Slide-- front & rear ($100), 30 L.P.I. Checkered Trigger Guard ($30), 30 L.P.I. Checkered Mainspring Housing ($60), 30 L.P.I. Checkered Front Strap ($150), Ambidextrous Safety ($125), Beavertail Grip Safety w/ "Memory" Groove ($120), Skeletonized Hammer ($60), Skeletonized Serrated Trigger ($100), Trigger Job ($100), Custom Fit Barrel w/ Air-Gauged Bushing ($100), Custom Slide-to-Frame Fit ($100), Polished Feed Ramp + Throated Barrel ($50), Lowered + Flared Ejection Port ($60), Custom Extractor ($75), Extended Magazine Release ($35), Beveled Magazine Well ($100) and Extra Magazine ($30).

So let's evaluate the list and then assess the logic. Is the pistol loaded down with every custom feature imaginable? Absolutely! Logically, when you do the math, does the value assigned to each custom feature make sense once compared to the prices of leading U.S. pistolsmiths? Absolutely! So is the Taurus comparable to any of the $2,100 custom 1911 pistols manufactured by the likes of Nighthawk or Les Baer? Absolutely not! Let's just face it, the PT1911 is not even in the same league as any of these custom 1911's. When you stop to genuinely compare craftsmanship and overall quality such as the use of tool steel grade parts, it's simply not even a contest-- shooting a genuine custom 1911 is like cheating compared to anything under $2K..

For that matter, when honestly evaluated, the Taurus PT1911 is still not even on par with a comparably equipped, production grade 1911's such as Springfield, Colt or Kimber. But then again, the aforementioned brands are still twice the price, where the custom shop 1911 heavyweight's will set you back over four times the price of a PT1911. Make no mistake, for what it brings to the table-- which is a well built, reliable 1911-- and considering how reasonable the price really is, the Taurus is an exceptional value. But then again, there are also other similarly equipped, well- built, reasonably priced 1911's on the market such as Ruger and Rick Island Armory that could give Taurus a run for the money. It really boils down to which one feels better in your hand and which pistol you like most. But technically, Taurus packs in many more custom features and sells for less than any other 1911 on the market.

The incredibly competitive price that Taurus charges for its 1911 pistol is easy to understand when you stop and consider, not only does Taurus make all their parts in-house at their state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, they also designed and built their own CNC machinery. When you keep everything in house, you greatly control costs and can still sell at a lower price, while offering more features than most competitors. Most of the small parts are manufactured metal injection molding (MIM), which is a very precise, cost effective process in wide use throughout the entire world of precision metal parts fabrication. Since the guns are manufactured in Brazil, where the wages are less than those paid to pistolsmiths here in the U.S., this also contributes even greater savings. Taurus is actually the third largest firearms manufacturer in the world, where production volume also pave the way for selling at lower prices.

Rather than cast, all Taurus PT1911 frames, slides and barrels are constructed from hammer forged, ordnance grade steel. Each part is machined to tolerance levels that surpass industry standards. A skilled pistolsmith hand fits and tunes each gun using quality components that are 100% made at the Taurus factory. Due to the very tight tolerances used, each major part is stamped with matching serial numbers to conform to Taurus' high standards. There are also many new innovations that Taurus introduced to improve on the original 1911 design. An internal self- engaging firing pin is unlike anything else on the market. The lightened and ventilated trigger is a newly patented feature that incorporates internal self-compensation for overtravel-- there is no screw you have to tinker with to get a smooth trigger.

Each Taurus PT1911 is given a match grade trigger job. The slide, frame, 5" match grade barrel and bushing are all hand fit. Genuine Novak sights get on target fast and its sight picture greatly increases alignment and tactical accuracy. An ambidextrous thumb safety is extended to ensure proper engagement, while allowing the shooter to successfully operate the pistol from either strong or weak hand shooting positions. The guns high ride beavertail grip safety allows the shooter to get higher on the bore axis for better shooting control, while the memory groove ensures the safety will consistently disengaged when properly grasped.

The pistol's stainless steel construction provides corrosion and rust resistance while also contributing the pleasant appearance of the handgun. The 30 lines-per-inch checkering on the front strap helps maintain a solid grip, even with sweaty hands. A set of checkered Taurus logo polymer grips also helps to maintain control and maneuverability. The pistol includes two 8- round magazines and weighs in at 38 ounces unloaded. For service and warranty, the pistol is backed by a factory lifetime warranty. Overall, the Taurus PT1911 has to be considered the highest value 1911 on the market when quality, features and price are factored together.
