Stoeger's Classic Double Gun. Founded in 1924 as a manufacturer, distributer and importer of firearms, today Stoeger is a wholly owned subsidiary of Benelli and enjoys a reputation for affordable quality. Unlike the Stoeger semi- automatic shotguns which are manufactured under Benelli license in Turkey, the Uplander is made by E.R. Armatino in Veranopolis, Brazil. Since 1962, the company has been in the business of producing affordably priced, quality shotguns for hunters, target shooters and sportsman around the globe. In addition to military and police contracts, E.R. Armatino is also the leading manufacturer and exporter of sporting arms for Brazil.

The Stoeger Uplander is a side-by-side hunting shotgun that is based on traditional English styling. It combines quality and dependability at an affordable price. While the side-by-side was once the choice of American hunters, over time, other designs like the pump action, semi- automatic and over-and-under were far less expensive to manufacture and gradually replaced this iconic shotgun. Today, the double gun has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity.

Make no mistake, the Uplander will never be confused as a work of art. To get that, you will have to spend more than the average hunter spent on his pick- up truck. But if you've always wanted to own a side-by-side shotgun, and rather not spend a fortune on a European model, take a closer look at the affordable Uplander. The gun possesses a brutal beauty, not at all unlike that of a well made hammer. Similarly, rather than nails, the Uplander is a tough, dependable, hard working tool designed to pound quail and pheasants out in the field. Hand crafted in Brazil, the receiver is precision machined to exacting tolerances to help ensure the Uplander will hold up year after year, no matter how much it is used.

For an entry level double gun, the wood-to-metal fit is surprisingly decent. Tooling marks are at a minimum and the lines where the barrels join the monobloc are equally unobtrusive. Out of the box, the gun has a tight fit and after running a few hundred rounds through it, the gun will loosen quite a bit. However, this is certainly not to say it will get sloppy. Another impressive attribute of the Uplander is barrel regulation, or the ability for each barrel to converge and hit as close to the point of aim as possible for its intended purpose. In this case, accuracy at upland bird hunting distances. Suffice it to say that patterning is consistent and regulation respectable.

One thing to consider is the Uplander has a tang mounted safety that is solidly constructed and automatically resets every time the action is opened. This should hopefully bring peace of mind to help prevent dangerous operating conditions -- specifically, when a shooter is in such a hurry that they forget to engage the safety after reloading. After a quick reload, it might take some shooters a few extra reps to get used to taking the gun off safe, but the process is nevertheless painless. Simply push the safety forward and the gun is instantly ready to fire again.

The Uplander is a 12- gauge side-by-side capable of chambering 2-3/4" up to 3" shells. The barrel break lever is also tang mounted and located directly in front of the safety. This places all the control features on the shotgun in one convenient, user friendly location. Traditional double triggers strategically provide a shooter with easier control over which barrel to fire first, while minimizing the cost of production.

Similarly, mechanical extractors may take an extra second or two to remove spent shells, but will never fail to lift magnum hulls from the chamber, even when extreme fouling is present. If you are unfamiliar with the concept, this means that instead of breaking the barrels over and the empties launching skyward (as is the case with ejectors), extractors lift the hulls slightly out of the chambers for easy hand removal. Extractors also come in handy at times when you are required to police up your empty hulls, and simplify the design to further minimize production costs.

The Stoeger Uplander's 26- inch barrels are outfitted with interchangeable chokes (IC & M) that are ideal for upland game shots. The "A-Grade" checkered walnut buttstock and forend combine to give the gun its classic good looks. The beavertail forend along with pistol grip styling of the buttstock provide a shooter with greater control and maneuverability.

A deep blued finish is nicely done and the bead front sight gets on target quickly. The gun quickly breaks down into 3- pieces for maintenance and cleaning. For service and repair, Stoeger is backed by a 5- year warranty. Overall, the Stoeger Uplander is simple, affordable and is a well built classic double shotgun that is designed for years of dependable service.
