Striker Driven Tactical Polymer. Ruger’s SR40 Compact has many of the traits shared by other popular striker-fired auto pistols, but also incorporates several clever features which make the design truly unique. This is a reduced dimension version of the full size SR40 pistol, but with a shortened grip and slide. Nevertheless, it still utilizes the same conventional cam lock action.

The polymer frame is made of a glass-filled nylon material, and has plenty of molded-in checkering for a secure grip. A cushiony reversible grip insert can easily be removed to allows for either arched or flat backstrap modes to accommodate a range of different hand sizes.

To change the insert, simply drift out the cross pin, which also serves as a lanyard attachment, and flip the insert over, reinsert the pin, and you are finished. The Ruger SR9c's frame has an integral equipment rail to attach lasers and / or lights. The grip angle of the SR40c closely mimics that of the beloved 1911 pistol, but is even thinner. In fact, the SR40c is impressively thin when you stop to consider it is capable of housing the extended seventeen-shot double stack magazine.

Two different types of magazines are supplied with the package. A 9- round flush fit magazine provides maximum concealment, while the extended 15- round magazine has a wrap around sleeve that fits the hand and handles just like a full frame pistol.

While some shooters want an auto pistol with a hair trigger with almost imperceptible movement, the majority of handgun owners simply do not. They want a safe, reliable self- defense trigger with a pull that is somewhere between light single-action and long revolver-like double action.

The Ruger SR40c complies with this line of thinking, having a trigger pull that measures around 7-1/2 pounds, with an overall travel that is approximately one-third of an inch. A trigger like this is a good idea for a fighting pistol. It is neither too light, nor too heavy for shooting quickly at combat pistol distances.

The SR40c has a magazine safety, which is located inside the slide and has the option of being user deactivated. When inserted into the pistol, the magazine pushes the active magazine safety upward, allowing the striker to hit the primer of the chambered cartridge.

A welcome feature of the SR40c is that it contains an ambidextrous thumb safety. Many striker driven pistols do not possess a manual safety, which can be unnerving for those who do not always keep their weapons holstered. There is also an internal striker blocking safety, a loaded chamber indicator and striker cocking indicator.

The design features a fully ambidextrous magazine release, rather than one that is merely reversible. The slide is constructed out of a high grade hardened steel alloy that has been finished with a highly corrosion and rust resistant black Nitride coating.

It wears a set of excellent low profile combat sights that get on target well. The front is drift adjustable for windage, and the rear is click- screw adjustable for elevation. In fact, they are typically much better sights than those supplied on competing brands.

All exterior surfaces on the Ruger SR40c have been rounded to minimize holster wear and was designed to be snag- free for concealed carry. It has a three and one-half inch barrel, a captive guide rod assembly, the overall length measures six and seven-eights inches and the pistol weighs in at just 23.4 ounces;

Overall, the Ruger SR40c is a powerful, easy to carry, small, lightweight, slim, reliable and rugged self-defense pistol backed by the famous Ruger reputation for customer service.
