Three Rings of Steel. The Remington Model 700 is history's all-time greatest selling bolt action hunting rifle. Shortly after its release in 1962, the gun became an instant hit among hunters, police marksman and military sharpshooters alike. While clothing, hair styles, shoes, phones, vehicles, computers and even the way we listen to music dramatically changed over the years-- one thing remained the same-- the venerable Remington Model 700.

Just to offer some perspective, at the time this iconic rifle was released-- JFK was still in the White House; rotary dial telephones were slowly being replaced by touch tones; the "bouffant" was the ladies preferred hair fashion of the day; the Olds Starfire Coupe was the coolest car on the block, Chuck Taylor's Converse sneakers were at their peak; the Telstar satellite rocket launched and began relaying television images from outer space for the first time in history; portable AM transistor radio prices dropped to where the average person could listen to music everywhere they went; room size electronic computers shrank to the size of a suit case; and the Cuban missile crises threatened to end life on this planet.

It's truly amazing when you stop and think about all of the technological advancements that have taken place over the last 50+ years and the fact that the Model 700 was so far ahead of its time that Remington is still considered the one to beat. There have been been over 900 different variations of this rifle built in a dizzying array of calibers, finishes, floorplates, stocks, barrel lengths, barrel contours and sight configurations. At the heart of the design is Remington's famous "three rings of steel" which delivers unsurpassed strength and tack-driving accuracy-- hallmarks of the gun that remain all the way to this day.

In a nutshell, the biggest difference between a push-feed action like the Remington and a controlled-round-feed like the Winchester Model 70 (i.e. "Pre-'64 Mauser" ), is that the latter requires a bolt face to be left open so the cartridge can rise up out of the magazine and slide into the extractor. It is this non- concentric, asymmetrical case support that is generally lower in strength and accuracy when compared to a push feed-- the same reason you rarely see modern sniper rifles or super high performance hunting calibers (such as the .460 Weatherby or .300 Remington Ultra), chambered in a Mauser action.

"Push feed" simply means that the Remington bolt pushes the cartridge up into the chamber. By comparison, the Model 700 SPS Tactical bolt face is recessed, completely encircling the case head in a ring of steel (that's one). Then there's the barrel shank (that's two) and finally the receiver ring (that makes three). An enclosed bolt face is stronger by design and provides maximum cartridge support, making the action more rigid
. In addition to strength, this triple layering of steel surrounds a cartridge case, enhancing accuracy by providing maximum concentricity and harmonic dampening-- critical factors when the ultimate objective is shooting tight groups.

A smooth bolt throw provides fast follow-up shots, while the knurled bolt handle provides a positive, non- slip grip in less than ideal weather conditions. The rounded action is machined from solid bar stock and features precision cut bolt raceways. The Remington's "C-Clamp" style internal extractor is located on the bolt face, while spent casings are ejected by way of a familiar spring loaded plunger system. The rifle's tang mounted, two- position safety is instinctively located at the rear of the receiver and within easy access of a shooter's thumb. One of the few minor design changes that have taken place over the years has been the fact the safety no longer locks the bolt closed. This redesign allows the Remington 700 SPS Tactical to mechanically remain on "safe" the entire time a rifle is being loaded or unloaded.

Another design change has been the addition of a upgraded trigger system-- the most recent update took place in 2009. Fitted with what Remington calls its "X-Mark Pro", the latest version is externally adjustable. It breaks like glass, has virtually zero creep and offers a level of shot control unmatched by any other factory trigger. A mirror- like finish on all components enhances resistance to corrosion. The X-Mark Pro trigger delivers true custom grade performance in a production trigger that is factory set at 3-1/2 lbs.

The 16.5-inch heavy hammer forged barrel is famous for holding tight minute-of-angle groups. If the shooter so desires, the muzzle is factory threaded (1/2x28 TPI) for attaching suppressors. While the rifle completely lacks iron sights, the action is drilled and tapped to accept optics. A hinged floor-plate swings down and allows a shooter to safely empty the rifle's five-shot magazine. The Remington 700 SPS Tactical features Ghillie Green Hogue OverMolded synthetic stock for better handling and improved shooting control. If you're unfamiliar with the process, OverMolded is a super rigid fiberglass skeleton with a soft, yet durable synthetic rubber which is injected at high pressure. It gives the stock an incredible feel. Rear and forward swivels studs make it easy to attach your favorite sling and bipod.

The rifle's satin stainless steel finish can be found on all steel parts, including the barrel. A release button is located just in front of the trigger and enables easy removal of the bolt for bore inspection and cleaning. The bolt plug doubles as a status indicator and is located at the rear of the bolt. This enables a shooter to visually look down and determine if the striker is cocked. Weighing in at 8.5lbs, the rifle is backed by a 2- year manufacturer's warranty. Overall, the Remington Model 700 SPS Varmint is a good looking, highly accurate, versatile hunting rifle capable of providing years of reliable service.
