A New Legacy Begins. The
story of the Colt Defender began in 1985 with the commercial release of the ill-fated "Officer" model. This would be the forerunner to the Defender series, featuring a shortened frame and slide.

The Officer had a 3.5" barrel and represented an even more compact alternative to the Commander model. Unlike the Commander, however, the Officer also featured a shorter frame size as well. Needless the say, reliability was hit or miss-- mostly miss, unless you exclusively ran ball ammo through the gun or took it to a gunsmith for extensive hand tuning.

In 2000, the Defender was introduced. This time, the frame size was the same as the Officer, but the pistol featured an even shorter 3" barrel. Colt hired acclaimed gunsmith Bill Laughridge from Cylinder and Slide fame to supervise the project. Years before, he was the first to successfully engineer a reliable 3" 1911 and imparted his knowledge to the Defender line.

With an unloaded weight of 22.5- ounces, the Defender makes for a compact package. The lightweight frame is constructed out of a durable aircraft grade 7075-T6 aluminum alloy that is silver hardcoat anodized with Teflon added for durability and to prevent galling during high performance shooting sessions.

The evolution of the Colt Defender series brought many new advancements to the table that were not possible back in 1985. At the heart of the design is a CNC machined forged stainless steel slide and slide stop.

A high ride, upswept beavertail grip safety allows the shooter to get up closer to the bore axis, thus reducing felt recoil, while also minimizing the potential for slide bite. When combined with the enhanced under cut trigger guard-- handling and control are greatly improved. This also allows a higher hold and subsequently better grip on such a shortened frame. The shooter also gains better control and less muzzle flip.

An integrated ridge down the middle of the grip safety's spine helps to ensure consistent disengagement, even in large hands. One of the pistol's best features is the low profile thumb safety. The paddle is semi- extended and easy to reach. It's not so wide, however, that it detracts from the gun's overall ability to be carried concealed.

The forged 3" stainless steel barrel is extremely accurate plus includes a polished and throated feed ramp to reliably swallow modern hollow point ammunition. The slide is rear serrated to help facilitate a secure grasp for charging or unloading. When combined with the tuned ejector and extractor, empty cases fly out to the rear-right-- instead of into the shooter's face, head or hat.

Upgraded Novak combat front and rear 3- dot white outline low profile sights get on target extremely well. It also has a flared and lowered ejection port to ensure reliable cycling. Dovetailed to not only provide a small degree of windage adjustment, this additional machining enables a shooter to easily upgrade to night sights in the future, should they so choose. A set of Hogue rubber finger groove grips provide a steady grasp in the hand.

The Colt Defender has a firing pin safety system the company refers to as Series '80 that should hopefully provide peace of mind. If the gun is ever dropped or banged, this feature prevents an unintentional discharge. In fact, the only way the pistol can be fired is if the shooter depresses the grip safety and then pulls the trigger rearward to release a fully cocked hammer. Unlike Series '70, the gun will not fire from the half-cock position.

A one-piece, full-length guide rod helps enhance overall accuracy and reliability. The skeletonized trigger and hammer work in tandem to substantially increase lock time, thereby elevating the overall performance potential of the pistol. Two 8- round magazines are included with the package.

For service or repair, the gun is backed by a manufacturers lifetime warranty. Overall, the Colt Defender in 9mm is low recoil, highly reliable, accurate and an extremely lightweight compact self- defense pistol that is ideal for concealed carry.
