Go Big or Go Home. In 1955, Eugene Stoner completed work on his revolutionary AR-10 rifle, which would eventually be miniaturized, sold to Colt and would evolve into the U.S. M16 combat rifle. Despite the fact it was smaller, lighter and easier to fire than any competing design, the mighty M1 Garand's heir apparent in the late '50s was destined to be the M-14 rifle.

The U.S. military contract was therefore awarded to Springfield Armory from 1959-1964. At the heart of the Colt LE901-16S lies a unique engineering design that would forever change the landscape of military small arms manufacturing. Unlike anything that came before, the bolt locks into a steel extension on the barrel, not the receiver.

This advancement paved the way for the use of aluminum receivers that would substantially lighten the rifle without sacrificing structural integrity. Instead of heavier wood furniture, the stocks were being constructed from advanced materials like space age polymers.

It therefore became possible to reduce the weight of this service rifle, thus allowing a soldier to carry more ammo into the field during extended combat operations. It would also give rise to a modular design where accessories could be more easily retrofitted to the platform.

The aircraft grade forgings of the Colt LE901-16S AR-10 have no die cast or extruded parts in the upper or lower receivers. Hard coat anodized and dry film lubed per military spec, the aluminum surfaces are corrosion and wear resistant. The gun weighs in at 9.4 lbs, placing it on par with the M1A rifle.

One of the most unique and exciting features of this rifle is the fact the lower receiver will readily accept any standard AR-15 barreled upper. This makes it one of the most versatile rifles on the market -- and perhaps ever created.

To accommodate a magazine capable of holding .308WIN rounds, yet be compatible with AR-15 uppers, Colt had to make a standard lower receiver magazine well larger. They did so without making the rear half of the receiver larger. This means that all standard 5.56 accessories and trigger components will fit, while even the takedown pins are standard mil- spec.

In addition, Colt has figured out a way to make a single magazine catch work on both .308WIN and 5.56 magazines. As such, this is an truly ambidextrous rifle with the magazine release and bolt catches located on both sides of the lower.

For those familiar with the AR-15 platform, the AR-10's stock return spring and buffer are essentially the same. In fact, the Colt receiver extension is a mil- spec AR-15 diameter 5.56 tube with a VLTOR IMOD 6- position collapsible stock attached. Moreover, the rifle positions the gas tube above the barrel, which terminate in the upper receiver and then connect to the gas key on the bolt carrier group.

This system of operation is commonly referred to as "direct impingement" (DI), which has several advantages over gas piston rifles. For semi- automatic rifles with barrel lengths of 16" or greater, DI is more accurate, lighter weight, far easier to free float the barrel and much less expensive to manufacture.

The 16.1" chrome lined barrel is constructed of 4140 chrome moly steel that has been double lapped for greater accuracy. It includes a Vortex flash hider, which is one of the best muzzle devices short of silencer. The 1:12" twist rate optimizes bullet weights between 150gr to 175gr.

Thanks to its longer effective operating range and superior stopping power, the .308 caliber AR-10 has numerous advantages over its small bore counterparts. Compared to the 55gr to 75gr bullet options on the 5.56, the 150gr to 175gr projectiles of the 7.62 cartridge deliver almost triple the energy in ft/lbs at 300 yards. This means cleaner kills and longer effective range shots on game animals -- while recoil remains controllable. Even though the weight increase of the AR-10 platform is noticeable, it is far from being cumbersome.

The handguard is an integral part of the upper, all of it machined from a single forging. In addition to a full length top mounted optics rail, the free float quad rail system also allows for the mounting of lights, lasers or a vertical foregrip. The Colt LE901-16S accepts standard Stoner / DPMS pattern magazines and a Magpul 20- round PMAG is included. In case a round fails to go in battery while feeding, the rifle possesses a forward assist, while a receiver dust cover prevents potential dirt and debris from entering the action during transport.

All steel parts wear a mil-spec manganese phosphate finish. The build quality is 100% with a super tight fit between the upper and lower receiver. While certainly upgradable later, the rifle is factory equipped with a standard mil- spec trigger.

Attached to the gas block is a flip- up front sight, where a detachable flip- up rear (Colt stamped, Troy Industries BUIS) sight rides on the receiver. The M4 style feed ramp, which is a smooth transitional cut into the lower receiver and barrel extension, further enhances feeding and reliability.

The rifle is backed by a 1- year warranty. Overall, the Colt LE901-16S AR-10 is an excellent choice for anyone looking to buy a hard hitting .30 caliber, universal platform, semi- automatic rifle capable of taking small to big game.
