Low prices on the Carbon-15 Superlight ORC start at Champion Firearms-

Defending Freedom Around the Globe. Founded in 1973, Bushmaster is a firearms manufacturer located in North Carolina and now owned by the Freedom Group. These are the same folks that brought you Remington, Marlin and DPMS -- among others. The CM-15 Superlight ORC is a Colt / ArmaLite pattern rifle, which means it is interchangeable with standard AR-15 systems. The one exception is the barrel nut, which at last check, appears to be proprietary.

At the heart of the design is a direct gas impingement system. Gas is tapped from the barrel as the bullet passes by the port located above the rifle's front sight base. The gas then rushes into the port and down a gas tube located above the barrel and into the upper receiver. From there, the gas tube funnels into the bolt carrier.

This gas system unlocks the bolt and begins the cycling process, but only after the bullet has exited the barrel. Direct impingement has several advantages over gas piston systems. For semi- automatic rifles with a barrel length of 16" or greater, impingement AR-15's are lighter, easier to free float the barrel, and much less expensive to manufacture.

A 4- position collapsible stock allows the shooter to adjust length of pull to their personal preference and the carbine length handguard provides steady handling. While not chrome lined, the lightweight profile 16.1" 4150 chrome moly steel barrel is surprisingly accurate. Both upper and lower receivers are constructed of a durable carbon fiber material.

Due to the fact the bolt locks into a steel extension on the barrel and not the receiver, the Bushmaster Superlight ORC can easily use such lightweight space age materials without sacrificing structural integrity. The rifle weighs in at 5.5 pounds and includes one 30- round magazine. All steel parts wear a mil- spec manganese phosphate finish, including the barrel.

This is an Optics Ready Carbine (ORC) with a standard Picatinny style flat top upper receiver and a radiused front gas block that contains neither iron sight nor rail. Included with the package is a generic red dot scope and weaver style rings. While there is no magnification, the optic is designed to get on a target fast and is suitable for most small to medium game applications out to 100- yards.

Completely absent is a forward assist or dust cover. While such features are deemed standard equipment on mil-spec rifles, they are not considered critical for sporting arms such as the Superlight, which is being exclusively marketed by Bushmaster for hunting type applications. For repair, the rifle is backed by a 1- year warranty. Overall, the Bushmaster CM-15 Superlight ORC is an affordable, well built AR-15 style rifle designed for year of reliable service.
