A Little Bit of Pistol Perfection. Over the years, there have been many attempts to produce a small-caliber version of John Browning's famous 1911 pistol. While other designs adapted the calibers to fit their guns, Browning took a different approach. They ingeniously scaled down their 1911-380 pistol to fit the .380ACP cartridge.

The Browning looks the same, operates the same, disassembles the same, but is scaled down 15%. This doesn't sound like much of a difference, but results in a palm sized pistol weighing in at just 18-ounces.

There are of course a few minor exceptions. Browning engineers discovered early on in the development phase that a 15% reduction in trigger guard would not be compatible with all hand sizes. As a result, the company wisely decided to leave the trigger guard alone and its disproportionate size is hardly noticeable.

In addition, rather than the short recoil lockup as seen on the big .45 frame 1911's, the Browning .380 is a standard straight blowback design. Just like a true 1911 centerfire pistol, the miniaturized Browning pistol uses the slide stop to hold its barrel in place. The muzzle is slightly flared to fit the bushing and ensure consistent accuracy-- shot after shot.

The mainspring housing is flat and the 1911-380 uses a curved, skeletonized trigger bow that surrounds the magazine inside the well-- just as it should. Similarly, the same can be said of the grip safety, thumb safety and magazine release-- which all function the same as a true 1911.

Considering the incredibly lightweight specifications on this pistol, it's not surprising that the slide is stainless steel and frame constructed of a durable polymer composite. The extractor is not external, but fully contained within the steel slide to prevent unintentional discharge should the pistol ever get dropped or banged.

The anatomically correct 1911 style ejector is pinned to the frame. A set of scaled down true combat sights may not exactly be the most highly visible for aging eyes, but do serve their intended purpose well. The trigger pull remains light and crisp, in true 1911 fashion.

It wears a hard coat black anodized matte finish. The gun includes an ingenious magazine design. To squeeze a full stack of eight shots into such a compact grip frame, the clever design team at Browning built the magazine with a 30% rim diameter stagger to accommodate all of the .380 cartridges.

Made here in the U.S.A., the pistol comes with a 4.25" barrel. Made of pressed steel with a plastic follower, thumb piece and base plate, it also has a stiff spring that should provide years of reliable service in the field. Constructed of checkered plastic for a positive grip, the panels offer improved control and handling.

For service or repair, Browning does not offer a written warranty. Overall, the 1911-380 is an accurate and cost effective training pistol patterned on one of history's most storied and successful designs.
