Benelli shotguns utilize a unique short stroke inertia operating system.
The M2 Tactical is a no-nonsense shotgun that police and military reach for when lives are on the line. The Benelli M2 Tactical auto-loading 12-gauge is a beauty to behold, with a sleek design, minimalist lines and refined features that generate love and affection from tactical operators around the globe. However, this gun’s true value lies deep within its combination of form and function.
While other auto-loading tactical shotguns use a gas-operated feeding system, the Benelli M2 is an inertia driven weapon. In other words, Benelli M2's autoloading system uses kinetic energy generated by the gun’s recoil to eject spent shells and then load a new cartridge into the chamber. This eliminates all the problems associated with gas-operated systems, such as the necessity of frequent cleaning and the tendency gas-operated systems have for malfunctioning during adverse weather conditions.
The system has three basic moving parts: bolt body, inertia spring and rotating bolt head. The M2 operates by means of a spring that’s freely interposed between the locking head and bolt. As the gun recoils during firing, the inert breech bolt moves forward, compressing the spring. When the spring is fully compressed, it overcomes breech bolt inertia and thrusts the bolt to the rear, under residual pressure. The gun extracts the shotshell case and reloads another shell from the magazine tube. The spring pressure is designed to delay the opening of the action until after the shot has left the barrel. This compensates for the different pressures produced by cartridges of varying power. No adjustments are necessary.
The Benelli M2 is hands down the best tactical auto- loader on the market and a proven shotgun you can bet your life on.
